Her hand rests on your shoulder, her cheek near your collar and her arm across your back. Your shirt is your handshake.

Fabric: what she’ll feel
Followers have opinions here, and they’re worth listening to. In a r/tango thread on formal clothes for leaders, one follower said she really appreciates cotton or linen shirts, because they keep her from feeling wet by the end of the milonga. On an older Dance Forums thread, one dancer explains that at balls he wears a silk shirt “so my partner has something nice to touch.”

Good choices:
- Fine cotton (poplin or oxford) for breathability
- Linen and linen blends for summer, though they wrinkle
- Cotton with a little stretch for freedom in the embrace
- Technical, moisture-wicking fabrics for practicas. Tangonaut‘s men’s outfit guide rates them even better than cotton tees for practice
Avoid scratchy textures, heavy synthetics that trap heat and anything with sequins or studs on the chest.
Sleeves: the great debate
Some followers don’t mind short sleeves. Others “cannot even bear the sight” of them, as Endre Tango jokes in Dressing tips for milongueros, which also links to videos on rolling sleeves and tucking shirts. The safe, classic answer is long sleeves, rolled to the forearm when the room heats up. It looks sharp and keeps your partner’s arm off your sweat.
Fit
- Room across the back and shoulders, so you can raise your arms into the embrace without the shirt pulling out
- Long enough to stay tucked in
- No bulky breast pockets where her cheek or hand will be
- Collar: classic or band, but nothing stiff that pokes her face
The spare-shirt rule
Here’s the most practical habit in tango. TangoLife London’s hygiene guide calls changing your shirt partway through the evening common practice among experienced dancers, especially leaders, and says some bring two or three. In the r/tango thread “How do you deal with sweat in milongas?”, leaders describe bringing a change of shirt and undershirt, handkerchiefs for the face and, in one case, six or seven T-shirts for a single milonga.
Our rule: one spare shirt for every two hours of dancing on a warm night, plus a small towel.

Undershirts: yes or no?
A thin, breathable undershirt can keep your shirt dry longer. Some leaders love technical compression tees; others say they don’t help. Test it at a practica first.
Why it’s worth it
Leaders get chosen by how they make followers feel. Dimitris Bronowski asked thousands of followers what makes a leader wonderful in Wonderful Tango Leaders. Being dry, fresh and pleasant to embrace is the easiest box to tick. His embrace tip does the rest.
